FAQs

Q: What is CBT?

A: CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) helps people to understand the connection between how they think, feel and behave as a way of helping them cope with emotional problems. CBT is based on the latest therapeutic research and evidence, and is recommended by  NICE guidelines for the treatment of many emotional problems.

Amongst the problems that can be addressed using CBT are depression, anxiety problems(OCD, panic, phobias, social anxiety, health anxiety, PTSD, and generalised anxiety disorder), anger, stress and low self esteem.

CBT is a collaborative therapy where therapist and client work together in understanding problems. You will be encouraged to develop the skills learned in sessions by completing work between sessions so that you develop strategies to help yourself after therapy is completed.

Q: What  happens at the first session?

A: The first session will be used to discuss your difficulties and to decide whether further sessions might be helpful. It is an opportunity for you to find out more about me and the way I work and whether my approach is right for you. There is no obligation to make a decision about whether you want to continue with sessions at the time, as you might need time to think this through.

Q: How often should I attend or have sessions?
A: it is usual to meet each week in the early stages of therapy, although later sessions can be wider spaced in order for you to have time to work on skills and strategies that you have learnt.

A course of CBT generally lasts from 6 to 20 sessions, but the needs  of each person will be very different. Your specific problems and treatment will be discussed during assessment sessions.

Q: What safeguards are in place?

A:  Good therapeutic practice requires me to undertake regular supervision. Supervision can be seen as a form of quality control and a way of ensuring that therapist standards are maintained.

The trust between client and therapist is crucial to the success of therapy, and I and my supervisor treat all information disclosed as confidential. To maintain my practicing certificate with the BPS, I engage in a minimum of 70 hours continuing professional development (CPD) annually.

I adhere to the BPS code of ethics.

Q: Where do the sessions take place?

A: I work from premises in St Albans. It is in a private location and has ample free parking available. I am 5 minutes drive from St Albans town centre and within easy reach of the M1 and M25.

Q: Who do you see for therapy?

A: I work mainly with individuals of 18 years of age and over. Clients can refer themselves without being referred by a health professional, although I do take referrals from GP’s.

Q: How can you be contacted?
A: I can be contacted by email, phone, or by my confidential voice mail service.
